LIGHTNING 101 – 12 Key Facts

1. On average, Lightning strikes the earth 100 times every second, and Nigeria and the West Africa region has one of the highest number of thunderstorm days per annum in the world (180 days/year). An index of Lightning Flash Density.

2. Lightning causes Transient Overvoltages (very fast electrical ‘Surges’) on Power, Data Communication, Signal and Telephone lines- carrying them to vulnerable equipment.

3. Surges can cause;
* Instant damage to equipment & its circuitry
* Costly and lengthy stoppages to operation
* Latent damage, causing breakdowns in weeks or months later

4. Electronic Systems can be protected from Surge damage, for a FRACTION of the Cost of Damage.

5. Most businesses are at risk and campus or multi-building sites tend to be especially vulnerable.

6. Computers and other Electronic Equipment can be affected by Lightning strikes as much as a kilometre away.

7. All sorts of Electronic Equipment are at risk; Computers, Building Management Systems, PABX telephone exchanges. CCTV, Fire and Burglar alarms, Uninterruptible Power Supplies, Programmable Logic Controllers and Data Acquisition Equipment.

8. Even, if Equipment is in a building with Structural Lightning Protection (SLP), it is still very much at risk. SLP or External Lightning Protection is designed to prevent damage to the building and loss of life. NOT the Electronic Equipment inside.

9. Lightning can and does strike in the same place, time and time again.

10. Sites that have suffered once, have proved themselves vulnerable and often suffer again within a matter of months.
