SOLAR PV SYSTEMS SUSTAINABILITY : Earthing and Lightning Solutions Approach

Solar PV systems are gaining global traction and prominence in the energy sector today.

It is the way forward to cut energy costs and create safer environment. However facility owners, engineers and stakeholders often seem to overlook factors that should be addressed for solar PV system sustainability.

Effective earthing & lightning solutions are critical and may be the assurance you need to ensure safety, reliability, efficiency, productivity and cost savings of the huge solar investment. How do you then, ensure the safety and longevity of the solar PV systems?

The measures are:

  1. Installation of proper earthing system.

A well-designed and properly installed earthing system is essential for diverting electrical currents safely into the ground. Determining the appropriate grounding requirements for the specific installation.

  1. Surge protection devices (SPDs).

Appropriate SPDs should be deployed that diverts excess voltage from lightning strikes or power surges away from sensitive equipment.

Install SPDs at various points in the system, including at the DC input side, AC output side, and communication lines.

  1. Bonding and shielding.

Proper bonding and shielding techniques help to prevent the buildup of static electricity and minimize the risk of lightning strikes.

Ensure that all metallic components of the system, such as the PV panels, frames, and mounting structures, are bonded together and connected to the grounding system.

  1. Lightning protection system (LPS).

Install a lightning protection system specifically designed for solar PV installations.

This system typically includes lightning rods, conductors, and grounding electrodes to safely dissipate lightning currents.

  1. Implement proper cable management.

Ensure that all cables are properly installed, secured, and protected from physical damage. Use appropriate conduit or cable tray systems to prevent accidental contact with other conductive materials.

  1. Regular maintenance and inspections.

Regularly inspect the system for any signs of damage, wear, or loose connections. Perform maintenance tasks as recommended by the manufacturers to keep the system in optimal condition.
